Traffic on the Central Avenue bridge will be reduced to one lane on Friday, Aug. 16, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., during paving work at the site of the Cochecho Falls retaining wall.

The contractor, George R. Cairns and Sons, Inc. of Windham, expects to conclude work in two weeks.

The $1.1 million project addresses safety concerns related to the retaining wall’s condition and integrity. The original granite blocks, which shifted over time, dated back to the early 1800s and were not intended to serve as a retaining wall. The old blocks were replaced with interlocking, precast concrete blocks that can withstand additional pressure.
