Interlibrary Loan (ILL) is the process of borrowing books from other libraries. Are you interested in a book you can’t find at Dover? Try requesting it through ILL!
Anyone with a Dover Public Library card in good standing is able to place a request.
What can I borrow?
- Audiobooks / Compact Discs
- Books
- DVD's
- Large Print Books
- Music CD's
What Can’t I borrow?
- No more than eight (8) items per month
- No new items/Publication dates in the last 6-12 months
- No out of state media requests (DVDs, CDs, Audiobooks, etc.)
- Items already owned by the Dover Public Library lest they’re missing or long overdue
How long does it take to get the item?
- Requests typically take 2-3 weeks
- Out of state requests may take longer
- Please let us know well in advance if you need the item by a certain date.
Are there any fees involved?
- No, there are no fees to request an interlibrary loan item
- There is a $3.00 fee for requesting items out of state items. We will contact you before requesting any out of state items
- Some academic libraries charge additional fees ($5-$30+). When submitting a request, you have the option to choose a maximum fee you’re willing to pay. We typically do not request these items, but we will contact you in case you’re still interested.
How do you submit an ILL request?
- Submit a request by clicking on the link at the top of this page! Alternatively, you can submit a request in person by asking your friendly, neighborhood librarian for an ILL form!
- All ILL requests must include the title of the item, author (or director/actors in the case of a DVD), and preferred format (Book, LP, CD, DVD, etc.). Other optional information includes publication year, ISBN, and edition details. If DPL staff cannot verify the title, we will contact you to confirm the details of the request. Please use a separate form for each request!
- Finally, you must provide your name, library card number, and preferred method of contact in order to submit a request.
How long can I keep the item?
- Typically, interlibrary loan Items are available to borrow for 3-4+ weeks at the discretion of the loaning library
- If you need additional time, please contact us well in advance to request a renewal
- The loaning library grants permission for renewals, not the Dover Public Library staff.
Interlibrary Loan is dependent upon the generosity and goodwill between libraries. Please be careful with their property and return it on time.
