Caroline K. Garland was born in Dover, NH on Jan. 25, 1854, the daughter of Thomas B. and Harriet (Kimball) Garland. She graduated from Dover High School in 1871 and from Salem Normal School in 1876.
Her father was librarian from Oct. 30, 1883 to April 5, 1884. Upon the resignation of her father in 1884 she became librarian of the Dover Public Library and held that position for almost 50 years.
In 1893 she represented New Hampshire in the World’s Fair and for some months was in charge of the New Hampshire Library Exhibit. She was second vice-president of the American Library Association (1905-1906) and was the first editor of the American Library Association Booklist.
Miss Garland was a member of the Colonial Dames and the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was one of the organizers of the Tuesday Club, a life member of the Appalachian Club and of the Home and Field Club of Brookline.
Caroline Garland died June 24, 1933 at her home on 65 Silver Street.
