A Whale In Dover

August 26, 1930 a whale stranded in the shallow waters of the Cochecho River as the tide went out. A crowd of hundreds gathered to see the spectacle. Tim Finn brought his rifle and shot the whale several times until it stopped moving. The species of whale is unknown. Some residents thought it was a tuna fish, others thought it was a horse mackerel, while still others believed it to be a blackfish. The whale measured 31 feet 6 inches long, and six feet wide. It was estimated to weigh about four tons.
