Downtown utility work postponed to Nov. 12

Downtown utility work by both Unitil and Eversource has been postponed until next Tuesday, Nov. 12. There will be no work activity or parking restrictions downtown on Friday, Nov. 8 or on Monday, Veterans Day, Nov. 11.

Beginning Tuesday, work will continue on First Street and will result in on-street parking restrictions near Central Avenue between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m., and may also result in intermittent closures of First Street. Local traffic for First Street may access the road from the Chestnut Street end.

Also beginning Wednesday next week, work will continue on Chapel Street between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. which will result in on-street parking restrictions between Main Street and the Janetos Plaza driveway, and a closure of Chapel Street at Main Street. While the street is closed, a detour will be in place via Broadway and Saint John Street. Parking restrictions will be posted in advance, and those who have parking permits for Chapel Street may park on Saint John Street or anywhere else on Chapel that is not posted.

Unitil is installing a gas main from Chapel Street to First Street.

Eversource is improving the reliability of the electric utility downtown. The work is in response to power disruptions earlier this year and follow-up meetings between Eversource and downtown merchants.
